With International Orangutan Day coming up on August 19th, we want to take this opportunity to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect these remarkable great apes and the rainforests they call home. Orangutans are one of our closest relatives, sharing around 97 percent of our DNA, yet they are critically endangered due to deforestation, hunting, and the illegal pet trade. The orangutan pictured here is Jeffrey, who lives on the island at Samboja Lestari in East Kalimantan. Like so many others, Jeffrey’s life has been shaped by the challenges orangutans face every day.
