Tomorrow, June 14th, starting at 6:00pm, the Chester County History Center will host its second annual RUSTIN: DAY OF FILM in honor of Bayard Rustin and in celebration of the stories and storytellers that elevate the African American and LGBTQ+ experiences. The History Center will welcome guests to a 90-minute block of short films curated by our partners at the West Chester Film Festival and followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Frederick Taylor. Welcome to our social media series on Chester County History Makers! Today we feature explorer Josiah Harlan, who was born this day (June 12) in 1799 and died in October 1871. A Newlin Township native, Harlan claimed to have achieved the title Prince of Ghor in Afghanistan and Punjab. Returning home, he wrote controversial memoirs, formed a Union regiment during the Civil War, and died in obscurity in California.
