In honor of Pride Month, we want to spend each day celebrating an LGBTQIA+ theatre artist who has changed the industry for the better. Today we honor Harvey Fierstein. Harvey Fierstein is a Tony-winning playwright and actor known for his gravelly voice and groundbreaking work. As an openly gay artist, he brought queer stories to Broadway long before they were mainstream, becoming a legend in LGBTQ+ theatre history. His breakthrough play TORCH SONG TRILOGY—which he also starred in—broke barriers with its honest portrayal of gay love and family. He won Tonys for both that and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, another landmark in queer theatrical storytelling. Fierstein also earned acclaim for his performances in HAIRSPRAY as Edna Turnblad and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF as Tevye, and he wrote the books for Broadway hits like KINKY BOOTS and NEWSIES. Fierstein’s bold voice and unapologetic authenticity have paved the way for generations of LGBTQIA+ theatre artists. This year, he will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Tony Awards, a fitting tribute to his decades of influence on American theatre. (fb)
